Gabourey Sidibe, who earned an Oscar nomination for playing a troubled, obese and pregnant teenager in the 2009 movie "Precious," says Joan Cusack once told her she should quit show business.
Sidibe, 28, made her comments on a recent episode of the Bravo talk show "Watch What Happens Live," when asked by host Andy Cohen about which celebrity disappointed her the most.
"Oh, this is terrible. What celebrity was I most disappointed by? Oh, and it's not in a mean way because I know that she meant well. I met Joan Cusack, who is my favorite, favorite," Sidibe said. "I love her. It was before I became whatever. I was at some industry party and she says, 'Are you an actress?' and I said, 'Yeah,' and she says, 'Oh, honey, you should really quit the business. It's so image-conscious.'"
"I think she really, really meant it in a good way. "Like, she really, really did. I was like, 'Oh, but I love you. Please don't tell me to quit my job,'" Sidibe added, laughing.
Cusack, 49, has not responded to her comments. Sidibe, who has struggled with her weight since she was a child, has often been mocked and criticized for her figure, especially by the likes of stand-up comedians as well as by shock jock Howard Stern. Her role in "Previous" marked her first major acting job. She has since gone on to star alongside Eddie Murphy and Ben Stiller in the 2011 comedy film "Tower Heist" and has a role in the hit Showtime series "The Big C," which began its third season earlier this month.
Cusack appears on another popular series that airs on the cable network' - "Shameless," which ended its second season on April 1. The actress is also an Oscar nominee. She received nods for the movies "In & Out" and "Working Girl." She is also known for portraying Jessie in Disney-Pixar's hit "Toy Story" animated movie franchise and is set to reprise the role in a fourth movie.
