LAUSD allowed to order 5 furlough days on teachers

LOS ANGELES

An arbitrator has ruled in favor of the district's request for the furlough to save $75 million in payroll costs this year.

Teachers union /*United Teachers Los Angeles*/ said the days will likely be taken at the end of the school year in June, ending the school year early. The union had challenged the plan. The arbitrator agreed with the school district's accounting.

UTLA now wants the district to rescind 875 layoff notices with the savings to payroll.

Nine-thousand-five-hundred layoff notices have already been issued to teachers and other professional employees due to a $390-million budget shortfall for the next school year.
