Alicia Silverstone unleashed a bit of a controversy last month when she posted a video of herself feeding her son pre-chewed food from her mouth on YouTube. Now the actress explains that she can see why people are upset but calls the process "natural."
"I can understand that it would make some people feel uncomfortable, possibly, because it's new to them," Silverstone said in an interview on April 27 with Entertainment Tonight, which can be seen below. "But I do want to let you know that this has been going on for thousands of years, still going on all over the place and it's natural."
The 35-year-old "Clueless" actress is mother to her 10-month-old son Bear. She posted a photo and YouTube video of the bird-like practice on her website, "The Kind Life."
As of this writing the video has 1.72 million YouTube views as well as 446 likes and 1,867 dislikes. "He literally crawls across the room to attack my mouth if I'm eating," Silverstone wrote on her blog at the time. "This video was taken about a month or 2 ago when he was a bit wobbly. Now he is grabbing my mouth to get the food!"
Silverstone explained during the interview, "It's a part of the weaning process, so while I'm still breast-feeding it's just a way to introduce him to food when he doesn't have teeth and things like that and he can't chew."
Silverstone and her husband Christopher Jarecki, a musician, welcomed their son, who is her first child, on May 5, 2011. Silverstone is an animal rights activist who maintains a strict vegan diet. She has written about vegan-friendly parenting and natural births on her website.
The actress is also known for films such as "Batman & Robin" in 1997 and "Blast From the Past" in 1999. She starred in the series "Miss Match" in 2003 and filmed the comedy film "Butter" with "Twilight" actress Ashley Green and "Wolverine" star Hugh Jackman. It is set for release in October.
