The crash happened around 6:20 p.m. Monday at Santa Fe Avenue and 28th Street.
Investigators said the Long Beach officer was driving northbound on Santa Fe Avenue in a patrol car. A civilian driving westbound on 28th Street tried to cross Santa Fe Avenue, made a left turn, entered the intersection and collided with the patrol car.
The civilian wasn't hurt, according to officials.
