Jewel has been tapped to play music legend June Carter Cash in a new biopic for the Lifetime network, it was announced on May 3.
The biopic, titled "The June Carter Cash Story," will be based on her son John Carter Cash's memoir "Anchored in Love: An intimate Portrait of June Carter Cash," according to Deadline.com. "American Horror Story" and "Big Love" actor Matt Ross will play June's husband and fellow music legend Johnny Cash.
The TV movie will begin shooting in the summer, according to the report, in order to debut later this year. John Carter Cash is also an executive producer on the film.
"Excited to announce I'm playing my hero June Carter Cash in a movie about her life," Jewel, full name Jewel Kilcher, Tweeted on May 3. It is the singer's first lead scripted role. In the past she has played herself in "Men in Trees," "Young and the Restless" and "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story." She also had small acting roles in "Ride with the Devil" and "The Lyon's Den."
The film will portray the early life of June Carter Cash, her solo career, three marriages and relationship with her children. It will also chronicle her role in helping Cash overcome substance abuse.
Reese Witherspoon won an Academy Award in 2005 for her portrayal of June Carter Cash in the film "Walk The Line." Joaquin Phoenix played Johnny Cash in the film and both actors sang the musicians' songs for the movie.
