This week at the movies, it may be May gray, but the summer movie season is here, and it kicks off with a movie that's already a huge blockbuster overseas. Now, the superhero team of a lifetime comes to America in Marvel's "The Avengers."
Yes, they've all come together as Thor's brother is threatening to take over Earth, and it's going to take the powers and talents of multiple, mighty superheroes to save the planet. Robert Downey Jr. is back as Iron Man, and he's joined forces with the Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow.
The Reel Deal: Exploding on to the big screen with a great script, tons of action, heart, and a surprising amount of humor, "The Avengers" may be the most fun you'll have at the movies this summer. It's going to be a tough act to follow. I'm in.
For you grownups not getting Hulk-smashed this weekend, a group of British retirees are in for surprises when they move to India in "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel."
Enticed by ads promising a luxurious and leisurely life in a restored palace, the seniors find out the accommodations are not exactly what they expected. But the hotel charms them in unexpected ways. Oscar winners Judi Dench and Maggie Smith star alongside Tom Wilkinson and Bill Nighy.
The Reel Deal: Good counter-programming for the more-sophisticated moviegoer. Join the great cast and visit the funny, poignant, and "Best Exotic Marigold Hotel." I'm in.
Also in theaters, in "A Little Bit of Heaven," Kate Hudson plays a successful career woman who makes a life-changing visit to the doctor. And the documentary "Last Call at the Oasis" explores the dire consequences of polluting the world's water supply.
