Rap mogul Marion "Suge" Knight helped launch the career of Tupac Shakur and on Monday, a rapidly spreading rumor pinned him to the late rapper's 1996 murder.

Rumors circulated on Twitter on May 7 that Knight had been arrested in Las Vegas for the murder of Shakur, but the Las Vegas Police Department denied that Knight had been arrested on Monday.

"I don't have any information that Suge Knight has been arrested," Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department spokeswoman Laura Meltzer told E! News. "We picked him up on some traffic warrants back in February and that is the last arrest I show for him."

Knight was arrested on February 10 and charged with possession of a "controlled non-medical substance." They discovered Knight had three outstanding warrants and he was taken into custody. Knight was released without bail because his charges were considered minor.

Knight is the former CEO of Death Row Records and has helped launch the careers of rappers Shakur, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. Knight has produced albums such as Dre Dre's 1992 debut solo record "The Chronic," a slang term for marijuana.

Knight is on unsupervised probation for driving on a suspended license. In December 2010, he was arrested on an outstanding minor traffic warrant as he left a restaurant near Universal Studios outside Los Angeles. In August 2008, Knight was detained and accused of beating his girlfriend and possessing illegal narcotics. The case was dismissed.

He was also jailed in 2003 for several months for violating parole by punching a parking valet at a nightclub in Hollywood. He has served time in prison for violating probation on assault charges stemming from a fight at a Las Vegas hotel in 1996. Hours after the fight, Shakur was shot and later died.

Shakur was perhaps best known for his feud with rapper Notorious B.I.G. and the East Coast/West Coast rap rivalry that escalated after Shakur's death. Shakur was fatally shot in the Las Vegas area while Notorious B.I.G., whose real name was Christopher Wallace, was gunned down on March 9, 1997 at a traffic light in Los Angeles by an unknown man after a Vibe magazine party. The case remains open and in April, hundreds of investigation documents were released by the FBI.

Shakur was under Knight's Death Row Records label when he was killed in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas in September 1996. Knight was driving the car that Shakur was killed in and one conspiracy theory insists that Knight ordered the hit on Shakur and Notorious B.I.G. Knight was never named as a suspect in Shakur's murder.

Shakur recently made headlines after a hologram of him was projected at the Coachella music festival last month, performing with Snoop Dogg. Knight also made headlines in April, after he told TMZ that he believed that Shakur was still alive.
