Authorities say Erik Affholter spoke with his mother on Sunday night, and he spoke with his ex-wife on Monday morning.
His girlfriend told police she dropped him off at the Metrolink parking lot on Los Angeles Avenue so he could gain access to a nearby hiking trail at about 10 a.m. Sunday. When she hadn't heard from him, she reported him missing just before 10 p.m.
Affholter was an NFL wide receiver for two seasons in the early 90s.
