Sarah Hyland, who plays Haley Dunphy on the ABC sitcom "Modern Family," has revealed that she recently underwent a kidney transplant.
Her father, who starred with her in the movies "The Object of My Affection" and "Cradle Will Rock," was the donor. The 21-year-old actress underwent the procedure in April after suffering for more than 10 years from kidney dysplasia, a disease that causes a kidney to develop abnormally, which could lead to complications - namely failure of the organ or an impact on the second healthy kidney.
"You know that family is going to be there for you no matter what. My dad gave me a freakin' kidney!" Hyland told Seventeen magazine. "But it's also the families that you create outside of your family. And you really find out what kind of people you're friends with. It was just amazing, and it really opened my eyes to see who's there for me and who's not."
Hyland was diagnosed with kidney dysplasia when she was 9 years old. She told the ABC show "Good Morning America" on Monday, May 14, that prior to her transplant, she had been experiencing pain and felt fatigued if she did not get 12 hours of sleep a night. She also said learned to manage her disease while working on the set of "Modern Family."
"I try and make it so that Haley's always sitting down," she said. "If you notice, she's sitting down a lot, texting, like leaning against something, texting. I've definitely worked it in. Like, when Haley walks up the stairs, that's like, my workout for the week."
"If you're sick you still go to work. In between takes, you sit down or you lay your head down or something," she told "GMA," adding: "Know that you're not alone. Even though it may seem like it a lot of the time. And that if you ask, 'Why me?' Well, why not you? You know? It makes you the person that you are today."
The season 3 finale of "Modern Family" airs on May 23. Hyland plans to spend the summer recovering from her transplant. She told Seventeen magazine that her boyfriend, Matt Prokop, who played her love interest on "Modern Family," helps her with her medication and takes her to her doctor appointments.
"Any other 21-year-old guy would not be there, I guarantee it," she said. "I am one of the luckiest people in the world to have him be there for me."
