OTRC: Betty White headed to Washington to talk about love for animals, career

2010 was the year of Betty White, who was actually named AP's 'Entertainer of the Year'. The 'Golden Girls' star enjoyed a pop culture comeback after she hosted 'Saturday Night Live' in May 2010 following a Facebook campaign. She later began to star in a new comedy series, TV Land's 'Hot in Cleveland', which has been renewed for a second season, launched her own comic book, apparel and sexy calendar and is set to write two books. Betty White, 90, plans to spend some time in Washington D.C. this week to talk about a subject close to her heart - animals.

The Emmy-winning "Golden Girls" and "Hot In Cleveland" star will visit the Smithsonian Institution and the museum's educational division, the Smithsonian Associates, at George Washington University, on Thursday to speak about her life and career and also sign copies of her books "Betty & Friends: My Life at the Zoo" and "If You Ask Me (And Of Course You Won't)."

All tickets for the event, called "Betty White's Animal Instincts," have been sold out, although a waiting list for additional spots has been set up.

"It is a real honor to be invited to be a part of the prestigious Smithsonian Associates program," White said in a statement. "I am looking forward to seeing everyone, sharing my lifelong passion for animals and discussing the importance of zoos both in their programs to educate the public about endangered species and in their efforts to bring them back from the brink."

The actress is also set to hold a book signing at the National Zoo on Friday. All 225 spots for that event, which is free, have already been reserved.

White, a longtime animal rights activist, is a co-chair of the Los Angeles Zoo. She has also worked with the American Humane Association for years and last week headed its "Be Kind to Animals Week" initiative.
