Justin Bieber, 18, may be a teen pop sensation who breaks YouTube records, but deep down, he's just like many teenagers - he has consumed alcohol.
However, he says he does not go overboard with his drinking.
"For me, it's just like, I like to be in control of myself," Bieber said in an interview with GQ magazine for its June 2012 issue. "I mean, I've had a beer, like, before.... But I never get out of control."
Consuming alcohol in the United States is illegal if you are under 21, while the legal drinking age in the singer's native Canada ranges between 18 and 19, depending on the area. It is 18 in most countries in Europe, Asia and South America. Bieber has toured all over the world.
During the GQ interview, Bieber hurled expletives and declared himself a "swaggy adult." He also defended reality star Kim Kardashian, often criticized in the press, after one of his business advisers insulted her look. Bieber and Kardashian had taken part in a photo shoot in 2010, drawing hateful messages from several of his fans.
""You guys are so mean, bro," GQ quoted Bieber as saying. "People say she doesn't do anything; she actually does do stuff ... She works hard."
Bieber is meanwhile preparing to perform at the Billboard Music Awards. The ceremony airs live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on May 20 at 8 p.m. ET. Last year, he won the Top New Artist award as well as Top Social Artist, Top Streaming Artist, Top Digital Media Arts and Fan Favorite Of The Year award. His "My World 2.0" album also won Top Pop Album.
Bieber is nominated for six awards at this year's ceremony. Check out a full list of nominations.
