Rihanna makes her acting debut in the acting film "Battleship" and recently explained to OnTheRedCarpet.com why she picked that role for her first experience.
"I loved that it was a small enough role for me to pull off," she told host Rachel Smith earlier this month. "I also had a great director [Peter Berg] that was also very enthusiastic and confident about me playing this role."
Berg has chosen to cast a musician in the past with Tim McGraw in the 2004 film "Friday Night Lights." Berg has also directed films like "The Rundown" with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and "Hancock" with Will Smith.
"I hadn't seen anyone that confident in someone who ever did this before so I felt safe," Rihanna said. "I trusted him more than I trusted myself."
"Battleship" is based on the popular board game of the same name. In the film, an international fleet of ships on earth come in contact with a fleet of alien ships who attempt to take over the planet. "Battleship" also stars Taylor Kitsch, Alexander Skarsgard, Liam Neeson and Brooklyn Decker. Rihanna plays Petty officer second class Cora Raikes, an ammunitions specialist.
The 24-year-old singer also got a little help from Jacqueline Carrizosa, a Navy veteran that inspired the Rihanna's character in the film. Carrizosa helped mentor Rihanna to get the certain aspects of the role right.
"Jackie is scary, she's super tough and she's the ultimate bad ass," Rihanna said about her mentor. "I think when I met her that's what made me super intrigued by her. She was just beautiful but she rolled up her sleeves and she had all these tattoos and when you see her in her element she's very ?she's fearless, she's one of the guys."
Rihanna said she even listened to some of Carrizosa's favorite music, which mostly consisted of hard rock and grunge, to get into the mood for the part. "My music will never fit into her iPod," Rihanna said.
The singer also had two days off from filming while shooting the movie in Hawaii. On one of the days off, Berg took the cast to a Navy SEAL base.
"It was one of the best experiences of my life," Rihanna said. "You would never have the opportunity to do that unless you're part of Navy SEALs or working with Peter Berg."
Up next for Rihanna is the Billboard Music Awards on May 20. The singer is nominated for 13 awards and said she is excited to go to the ceremony.
"I get excited about the awards. Getting nominated so many times is a big deal because it's a chart that's respected by artists and the fans," she said.
