"Battleship" failed to sink "The Avengers" from its reign at the box office on Friday.
The marvel superhero film earned an estimated $15.3 million on Friday, for a total box office cume of $417.3 million domestically and over $1 billion worldwide. Last week, the movie broke more records, becoming the first film to earn $100 million in its second weekend in release.
"Battleship," which stars Taylor Kitsch and Alexander Skarsgard, debuted in second place with $9.5 million, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The film had an anticipated weekend opening of $40 million, but it is now looking like the action flick's weekend box office will be around $26 million.
"Battleship" is based on the popular board game of the same name. In the film, an international fleet of ships on earth come in contact with a fleet of alien ships who attempt to take over the planet. "Battleship" also stars Liam Neeson, Brooklyn Decker and Rihanna, who made her acting debut as an ammunitions specialist.
Sacha Baron Cohen's comedy "The Dictator" landed in third in the box office, earning $5.7 million after opening on May 16. Cohen has been pulling his usual stunts while promoting the film, which was directed by Larry Charles of "Seinfeld" fame.
"The Dictator" stars Cohen as a foreign dictator of the fictional Republic of Wadiya who comes to America. According to a statement from the studio, the film tells the story of "a dictator who risked his life to ensure that democracy would never come to the country he so lovingly oppressed."
In fourth place in Friday's box office was the comedy, "What to Expect When You're Expecting," which is based off one of the best-selling nonfiction pregnancy guidebooks of the same name and stars Cameron Diaz, Elizabeth Banks, Anna Kendrick and Jennifer Lopez.
Also opening in limited release this week was Maggie Gyllenhaal and Hugh Dancy's comedy following the invention of the vibrator entitled, "Hysteria," which stars Dancy as a young doctor hired to aid the leading doctor in women's medicine in "stimulating the nervous system" of his female patients, in an attempt to cure "hysteria."
