Taylor Kitsch stars in the action movie "Battleship" and talked to OnTheRedCarpet.com about teaming up with Peter Berg again, going through boot camp for the film and working with Rihanna and Brooklyn Decker.
Kitsch, who is likely best known for playing Tim Riggins on the "Friday Night Lights" television series previously worked with Berg when Berg directed episodes of the show.
"That energy [that Berg has] is very infectious especially when we're shooting on a destroyer on Pearl Harbor. We shut down the [USS] Missouri, which is probably the most famous war ship to ever be built," Kitsch told OnTheRedCarpet.com host Rachel Smith. "So to be that and to have his energy and be surrounded by Naval officers -- it kind of encompasses the whole film in a nut shell."
"Battleship" is based on the popular board game of the same name. In the film, an international fleet of ships on earth come in contact with a fleet of alien ships who attempt to take over the planet. "Battleship" also stars Rihanna, Alexander Skarsgard, Liam Neeson and Brooklyn Decker.
Taylor Kitsch plays Lieutenant Alex Hopper, a US Navy Tactical Action Officer with a rebellious streak who has to defend his crew against the aliens. Decker's character is his love interest.
"A lot of fun the action is insane and it's just a lot of fun to work with Pete again," he added. Kitsch and Berg will be working on a second film together when the two shoot the film "Lone Survivor" later this year. That film is based on a book by Marcus Luttrell about a group of Navy SEALs.
For his work on "Battleship," Kitsch received some training from Navy veterans to learn the language of working and commanding the ships and getting the right feel for his character. A retired naval captain named Rick Hoffman served as a consultant on the film and put the actors through a boot camp.
"He was great," Kitsch said of Hoffman. "And to be surrounded by these guys --it grounds you in the character and in the circumstance because it is insane, what's going on in the film."
"To be surrounded by these guys, it just facilitated the process and at the end of the day that's what you need in the grandeur of this kind of film," he added.
Kitsch also talked about his co-stars Brooklyn Decker and singer Rihanna, whom he affectionately referred to as "Brooks and Ri."
Kitsch said Rihanna was, "great, she was very hands on."
"I've been very fortunate to work with some incredible people," he added. "She [Rihanna] was awesome. I can't say enough about her, I mean she's taking over the world. She's kicking some ass and so I admired her work ethic and I wish her nothing but amazing things."
"Battleship" hit theaters on May 18. Check out the trailer below.Additional reporting by Rachel Smith, host of KABC Television's entertainment show "On The Red Carpet" (check for local TV listings).
