"The Avengers" continues to dominate the box office and the blockbuster action film "Battleship" didn't stand a chance against the super heroes.
The comic book-inspired film starring Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson, Jeremy Renner and Mark Ruffalo landed in the No. 1 spot over the weekend with an estimated $55.1 million domestically, according to the Associated Press. It is the third weekend the film has ended up in the top spot and the movie has earned an additional $56 million in international venues.
So far, the film has earned $457.1 million domestically and $723.3 million internationally and it inches closer to passing the $1.2 billion worldwide mark.
"Battleship," the action/sci-fi film, came in a distant second place with an estimated $25.4 million domestically.
"Battleship" is based on the popular board game of the same name. In the film, an international fleet of ships on earth come in contact with a fleet of alien ships who attempt to take over the planet. "Battleship" also stars Rihanna, Alexander Skarsgard, Liam Neeson and Brooklyn Decker.
The movie has grossed $226.8 million internationally since its launch in April, making its worldwide total $252.1 million.
In third place is the Sacha Baron Cohen comedy "The Dictator." The film, which co-stars Anna Faris and features Cohen playing a third-world tyrant, opened in third place with $17.4 million. The film first hit theaters on Wednesday, May 16 and has earned a domestic total of $24.5 million so far.
Internationally, "The Dictator" earned $30.3 million in 29 markets, raising its worldwide total to $54.8 million.
Johnny Depp's latest collaboration with director Tim Burton, "Dark Shadows," came in fourth place for its second week in theaters. Last week, the film opened in second place. "Dark Shadows" earned an estimated $12.8 million domestically. Its box office domestic total now stands at $50.9 million.
The star-studded pregnancy comedy "What to Expect When You're Expecting" rounds out the top five films of the box office weekend. The movie, which features Cameron Diaz, Elizabeth Banks and Jennifer Lopez debuted in the fifth slot in its first weekend with $10.5 million.
