Malin Akerman says she used to be homeless and unemployed in Los Angeles when she was a struggling actress.
The 33-year-old Swedish native and former model made her comments to OnTheRedCarpet.com correspondent Tony Cabrera at the recent Los Angeles premiere of her latest film, "Wanderlust," which features main star Jennifer Aniston.
"When I first came out here, I was completely jobless for a whole year," she said. "It was not fun but I was young enough that I didn't have anyone depending on me. I actually had a great time with my best friend. We were really creative with how we were going to get food and how we were going to make payments for rent. I did not sell my body on the street, if you were wondering."
"I've had moments of being completely homeless," she added. "I wandered L.A. That's how I was introduced to L.A. It was great."
Akerman was raised in Canada. There, she worked as a model as a teenager and made her on-screen acting debut in 1997 in an episode of the sci-fi series "Earth: Final Conflict," which was shot in Toronto.
She later starred in other Canadian productions before nabbing the role of Lisa Kudrow's HBO series "The Comeback," which was filmed in Los Angeles and was canceled after its debut season aired in 2005. Akerman then played a recurring part on the HBO show "Entourage," which depicts the life of a New York City acting hopeful's journey to fame and transformation into a Hollywood heartthrob.
Akerman, who would go on to star in films such as the 2009 blockbuster "Watchmen," told OnTheRedCarpet.com about one ways she obtained food in Los Angeles when money was tight.
"We went to one of the banks and they would have free coffee and little mini muffins for breakfast," she said. "We would go and have free coffee and pretend like we were checking our bank account, which was nonexistent."
"Wanderlust" hits theaters on Friday. The movie reunites Aniston with Paul Rudd, her co-star in "The Object of My Affection." The two play a New York couple that leaves their city lives and lands in a clothing-optional hippie commune where they meet Seth, who is played by Justin Theroux, the actress' real-life boyfriend.
Akerman plays Eva, a former New Yorker who now lives in the commune and enjoys her less stressful lifestyle. She told OnTheRedCarpet.com that it was a little awkward being around the people playing nudists while filming "Wanderlust."
"It was more just like, I really don't know where to look, when you're standing there, and you're trying to talk to them and you're going, 'Wow, this is so hard not to look down right now,'" she said. "But other than that, it was just kind of cool that they were super comfortable just standing around naked. I'm sure it felt nice."
