'Snow White and the Huntsman' debuts at No. 1 with $56.2M

There was a fairy tale ending at the box office this weekend. "Snow White and the Huntsman" debuted at No. 1 with $56.2 million domestically, about $20 million higher than industry expectations.

Universal Pictures' action film inspired by the fairy-tale princess stars Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron.

"Snow White" bumped Sony's "Men in Black 3" from the top spot and into second place with $28 million.

In third place was the superhero flick "The Avengers" with $20.4 million.

The top 10 films of the weekend were:

  9. "Chernobyl Diaries," $3.1 million
  10. "For Greater Glory," $1.8 million
