John Mayer, who has dated some of the most sought-after ladies in the entertainment world, says he felt "humiliated" when he heard former flame Taylor Swift's song "Dear John," which is believed to be about him.
"It made me feel terrible," Mayer, 34, told Rolling Stone in an interview published on the magazine's website on Wednesday, June 6. "Because I didn't deserve it. I'm pretty good at taking accountability now, and I never did anything to deserve that. It was a really lousy thing for her to do."
"I never got an e-mail. I never got a phone call," Mayer said, adding that he learned about the 22-year-old country singer's feelings from her song. "I was really caught off-guard, and it really humiliated me at a time when I'd already been dressed down. I mean, how would you feel if, at the lowest you've ever been, someone kicked you even lower?"
Mayer and Swift collaborated on his 2009 song "Half of My Heart" and are believed to have dated for several months before "Dear John" was released. Swift, 22, wrote "Dear John," a ballad, for her latest and best-selling album "Speak Now," which was released in 2010, while Mayer was on a career hiatus after making controversial comments about his love life in the press.
She has never confirmed that "Dear John" was about the singer. Swift told Yahoo! Music at the time of the release of "Speak Now" that all the tracks are like "a roadmap" to what a particular relationship stood for."
The lyrics to "Dear John" depict a young woman who was apparently hurt by someone else. The track contains the lines: "Don't you think I was too young to be messed with? / The girl in the dress cried the whole way home / I should've known."Mayer, who has put out five successful albums in the past 11 years, isn't too pleased with her as a musician, either. "I will say as a songwriter that I think it's kind of cheap songwriting," he continued. "I know she's the biggest thing in the world, and I'm not trying to sink anybody's ship, but I think it's abusing your talent to rub your hands together and go, 'Wait till he gets a load of this!' That's (expletive)." Both of the guitar-playing musicians have had their fair share of romances. Swift has been linked to Joe Jonas, Taylor Lautner and Jake Gyllenhaal. Mayer has dated Jessica Simpson, Jennifer Aniston and Minka Kelly and raised controversy due to sexually-explicit and racist comments regarding his love life, made during 2010 interviews to Playboy and Rolling Stone. He said last month that he said he made his remarks because he "didn't want to be boring."
In January 2012, Swift gave some of her "dating deal breakers" to Vogue magazine.
"If someone doesn't seem to want to get to know me as a person but instead seems to have kind of bought into the whole idea of me and he approves of my Wikipedia page? And falls in love based on zero hours spent with me? That's maybe something to be aware of," Swift told Vogue magazine in her February 2012 cover story. "That will fade fast. You can't be in love with a Google search."
