OTRC: Dean Cain: FOX dating show 'The Choice' is 'fun,' 'ridiculous' (Video)

Dean Cain, best known for playing Clark Kent in the 1990s series "Lois & Clark: the New Adventures of Superman," has turned to reality TV to find the girl of his dreams.

Okay, not really. But the 45-year-old actor is one of the celebrity cast members on the FOX summer dating series "The Choice," which premieres on Thursday, June 7 at 9 p.m. ET. Cain joins the likes of Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino and DJ Pauly D of MTV reality show "Jersey Shore," pop star Joe Jonas, Rob Kardashian and "American Idol" season 3 winner Taylor Hicks.

"'The Choice' is ... not a joke but it's not a real serious dating show, either," Cain told OnTheRedCarpet.com host Rachel Smith. "It is entertainment, it is summer, silly, fun entertainment."

"A friend of mine produced it," he added. "The whole thing took a day."

"Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman" aired between 1993 and 1997. After the show ended, Cain has roles on shows such as "The Division," "Hope & Faith" and "Las Vegas." He hosted the series "Ripley's Believe It or Not!" between 2000 and 2003 and recently played himself on the ABC sitcom "Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23." "The Choice" marks his first reality competition show role.

The show begins with a "Blind Round." Four celebrities sit in rotating chairs and are unable to see the contestants, who talk about their lives, their sexiest attributes and what they want in a date. The stars who like what they hear will pull on their "love handle" and their chair will spin around to face the contestant.

"And so, you hear, you know, 'I'm 5'10", very athletic,' you're like, 'That's interesting' and start pulling your little thing back," Cain said. "[Then you hear] 'I like to eat my partner's head off after having sex like a praying mantis,' you're like, 'NO!' I don't want that!' You don't know what you're going to hear - you hear the most outlandish, ridiculous stuff. It's fun."

Much like the NBC singing contest series "The Voice," if two or more stars do this, the contestant will get to pick which celebrity to go with. They must get three players on their team and then enter a "Speed Choice" round in which the hopefuls have several seconds to make their argument about why they should be chosen to move onto the final round. One contestant out of the three is then eliminated.

Deeley will then pose a challenge question to the final two on each team and the celebrities pick one of them as their date.

Cain said "The Choice" is not the same as another current popular dating series - "The Bachelor." The ABC show does not feature known celebrities, is shot in multiple locations and is more dramatic, incorporating elements of cast members' personal lives and a storytelling approach.

'The Bachelor' takes it seriously - like they want you to believe like they're really going to find romance," Cain told OnTheRedCarpet.com. "We're not trying to do that at ALL."

"The Choice" is hosted by Cat Deeley of FOX's "So You Think You Can Dance" and also includes female celebrities, such as actresses Carmen Electra and Sophie Monk.

I mean, not of us need to get a date and then if you look at these girls, none of them need to find a date and if you look at the girl 'Bachelorettes' who do it, they don't need a date," Cain said. "But what's fun is to get these people out there."

"It's not about the date you go on, it's about the competition - the silliness of the competition as it goes on," he added. "I promise you, it's one of those things that's going to be really fun to watch. It's kind of ridiculous but I had a good time."

Cain became a Hollywood heartthrob thanks to the success of "Lois & Clark: the New Adventures of Superman" and has in the past dated actress Brooke Shields, star volleyball player Gabrielle Reece and country singer Mindy McCready. He has a son, Christopher, with ex-girlfriend Samantha Torres, a Spanish model and former Playboy Playmate. The boy turns 12 on Monday, June 11.

Cain spoke to OnTheRedCarpet.com during a recent promotional appearance at Sprinkles Cupcakes' flagship bakery in Beverly Hills, California. He stars in the Hallmark Original Movie "Operation Cupcake," which is set to premiere on June 16 and also stars Kristy Swanson, who made her reality TV debut on the short-lived "Skating with Celebrities" in 2006.
