LAUSD, unions agree on furloughs plan to avoid layoffs

LOS ANGELES

Tuesday the school board finalized the deals that call for workers and teachers to take 10 furlough days during the coming school year to avoid the layoffs.

It will also prevent planned cuts to some early education and adult education programs.

The L.A. Unified School District is facing an estimated $390 million budget deficit.

And the school board will not ask voters to approve a district-wide parcel tax in November because other tax measures are already on the ballot.

Meantime, education cuts prompted college students to stage a funeral procession Tuesday.
