OTRC: Andrew Garfield on Emma Stone's 'Spider-Man' casting: I was so happy

"The Amazing Spider-Man" star Andrew Garfield managed to keep his off-screen romance with Emma Stone private, but now the actor has opened up about how happy he was when his Gwen Stacy was cast.

The pair, who have been romantically linked since June 2011, met during a screen test for the upcoming superhero movie. While decked out in full hair and makeup, the pair read a few scenes and the chemistry was immediately apparent.

"We got on really well as people, in between [takes]," Garfield told MTV in a recent interview. "That was the fun stuff: In between, we'd just mess around, and I felt, 'Ah, this is different.' I wasn't really aware what was happening in the screen test. She keeps you on your toes, and that wakes you up. That was the beginning."

Stone portrays Peter Parker's blonde love interest Gwen Stacy in "The Amazing Spider-Man," opposite "The Social Network" actor. Stone and Garfield recently promoted the film at the Sony 4 Spring Edition photo call in Cancun, Mexico.

"Obviously I was so happy that she got the role and decided to do it," he continued. "Those are the days I'd look forward to, you know? For Peter as well, because Peter goes through some horrible stuff in the movie. There's some joy to be had when experiencing his first love."

In the "Spider-Man" reboot, Peter Parker (Garfield) goes in search of clues that might explain what happened to his parents, who disappeared when he was young. His search brings him to Dr. Curt Connors, his father's former partner.

Garfield has appeared in films like "The Other Boleyn Girl," "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" and "Never Let Me Go." The 28-year-old English actor was nominated for a Golden Globe for his role "The Social Network."

Stone rose to fame after appearing in "Superbad" and quickly racked up roles in "Crazy, Stupid, Love," "Friends with Benefits" and "The Help." Stone was nominated for a Golden Globe for her break-out role in "Easy A."

"The Amazing Spider-Man" is slated for release on July 3, 2012. Watch a trailer and Angrew Garfield and Emma Stone's interviews with MTV below.
