OTRC: Dean Cain talks 'Operation Cupcake,' military background (Video)

Dean Cain talks to OnTheRedCarpet.com at Sprinkles Cupcakes bakery in Beverly Hills, California in May 2012 to promote the Hallmark Original Movie 'Operation Cupcake,' which premieres on June 16.

Dean Cain is likely best known for playing Clark Kent in the 1990s series "Lois & Clark: the New Adventures of Superman," but with his new role on the Hallmark Channel television movie, he'll be taking on a different kind of hero.

Cain plays Army Colonel Griff Carson, a U.S. solider who returns from Germany on a two-month leave. His wife Janet, played by original "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" star Kristy Swanson, assigns him to help her run her cupcake shop hoping to keep him busy while on leave. Griff attempts to take a military approach to the business and soon runs into trouble.

"I am a humongous supporter of our men and women in uniform. Our military is bar none the finest in the world. All volunteer and they're amazing," Cain told OnTheRedCarpet.com host Rachel Smith in a recent interview. "They have my full and complete support. So when a role like this jumped up, I was like this is fantastic!"

Cain, 45, comes from a military family himself. He said his son Christopher "thinks he might want to be a soldier." The boy turned 12 on June 11.

Cain said his "Operation Cupcake" character's transition to coming back home mirrors many of the same experiences members of the military go through.

"He needs to repair and restart his relationships with his family and that's difficult to do," Cain said about his character. "That's difficult for a lot of our soldiers, our men and women, when they come back."

"We deal with the relationships and hopefully people will see something in what we're doing and maybe it'll help ease the relationships when they get back home," he added.

Cain is one of the celebrity cast members on the FOX summer dating series "The Choice," which premiered on Thursday, June 7. He was joined by the likes of Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino and DJ Pauly D of MTV reality show "Jersey Shore," pop star Joe Jonas, Rob Kardashian and "American Idol" season 3 winner Taylor Hicks.

"'The Choice' is ... not a joke but it's not a real serious dating show, either," Cain told OnTheRedCarpet.com host Rachel Smith. "It is entertainment, it is summer, silly, fun entertainment."

"Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman" aired between 1993 and 1997. After the show ended, Cain has roles on shows such as "The Division," "Hope & Faith" and "Las Vegas." He hosted the series "Ripley's Believe It or Not!" between 2000 and 2003 and recently played himself on the ABC sitcom "Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23." "The Choice" marked his first reality competition show role.

"Operation Cupcake" premieres on June 16 at 8 p.m. on the Hallmark Channel. Check out a preview below.
