OTRC: Kelly Macdonald of 'Brave': Being Disney princess is 'dream come true' (Video)

Kelly Macdonald talks to OnTheRedCarpet.com about the Disney-Pixar movie 'Brave,' which is set for release on June 22, 2012.

Kelly Macdonald says it was a "dream come true" to play Disney's newest Princess and Pixar's first major heroine, the red-headed Merida, in the new animated film "Brave.".

The film is set in her native Scotland also stars Kevin McKidd of ABC series "Grey's Anatomy." The 38-year-old Scottish actor and MacDonald, 36, had starred together in the 1996 film "Trainspotting." In "Brave," he plays Lord MacGuffin and his son, Young MacGuffin. The lord and two others, Craig Ferguson's character, Lord Macintosh, and Robbie Coltrane's Lord Dingwall, present their boys to compete for Merida's hand.

But Merida is no damsel in distress - the feisty character showcases her bravery and archery skills as she concentrates on bigger tasks at hand - trying to undo a spell that affects her mother, the queen. "Brave" also stars Emma Thompson, Julie Walters and Billy Connolly and hits theaters on Friday, June 22.

"She's so cute," Macdonald told OnTheRedCarpet.com. "She's just so cute, her little sort of crumpled face sort of hiding within all this hair. She's great."

"I'm very lucky," she added. "It's a dream come true. It is a great pleasure and I think for this film, if it was a live action, I don't think I would have been cast. It's just so great to get to play this energetic, feisty, adventurous girl."

Macdonald began her on-screen career in the 1990s. Aside from "Trainspotting," she also starred in the films "Elizabeth" with Cate Blanchett, "Finding Neverland" with Johnny Depp, "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," "Nanny McPhee," "No Country for Old Men" and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2," in which she played Helena Ravenclaw.

She also played Margaret Schroeder in the HBO series "Boardwalk Empire," between 2010 and 2011. "Brave" marks her first animation project.

The film hits theaters on Friday, June 22.
