Monrovia standoff: man surrenders after 10 hours

MONROVIA, Calif.

Officials said a man was despondent, perhaps suicidal, inside a home. When officers tried to communicate with him, the man said he was armed and would not come out.

Police were forced to shut down Duarte Road, between Sixth Avenue and Alamitas Street. An apartment building across the street was evacuated during the standoff.

The man finally surrendered after tear gas was fired into the home around 1 a.m. Wednesday. No one was hurt.
