For many Bon Jovi fans, the words "Jon Bon Jovi" and "Unplugged" bring to mind an acoustic performance by frontman Jon and guitarist Richie Sambora at the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards as well as a intimate 1992 MTV concert that featured the heartthrob singer rocking a pair of ridiculously tight jeans.
Now, some 20 years later, Jon Bon Jovi, 49, has teamed up with popular cosmetics company Avon, which describes itself as "the company for women," to launch a line of "Unplugged" fragrances for members of both genders.
The new scents "exude passion, soulfulness and intensity" and will be sold starting in October, the firm announced in a statement on Monday, July 2, adding that "the partnership unites a rock icon and a major force in beauty, both of whom are dedicated to charitable efforts."
The singer heads the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation, a group that helped impoverished families. Last month, it donated $100,000 to help fund a new permanent housing project for homeless teenage mothers and their children in Philadelphia.
"Avon, and the Avon Foundation for Women, have given support and a voice to those in need for decades," the singer said in the company's statement. "Their philosophy of empowerment sends a strong message and I'm pleased to partner with them."
"Jon's music and philanthropic work celebrate independence and optimism, two beautiful qualities that radiate from within," said Lily DeStefano, Vice President of Avon North America Beauty. "The 'Unplugged' scents evoke an emotional connection ? something Jon inspires in audiences around the world."
The fragrance "Unplugged for Her" is described as a "floral oriental fragrance" and will be available in October. "Unplugged for Him," touted as a "woody floral musk scent," will be sold a month later.
Avon generates more than $11 billion in annual revenue, namely from its sales representatives, often dubbed "Avon Ladies," who sell company products directly online and in person in more than 100 countries.
Bon Jovi the singer has always enjoyed a large female following, which has grown over the years thanks to his film career. The singer has starred in movies such as "Moonlight and Valentino" and "U-571" and also had a recurring role on the hit legal comedy "Ally McBeal," a show popular with female audiences.
Bon Jovi, a New Jersey-based band, rose to fame in the 1980s and is known for its rock anthems, such as "You Give Love A Bad Name" and "Livin' On A Prayer" as well as its ballads, such as "Always" and "Bed Of Roses." The Grammy-winning group is among the most successful in the world, with more than 130 million albums such, and had the highest-grossing world tours in 2008 and 2010.
Bon Jovi toured last year as well and is set to perform at the Greenbrier Classic in Fairlea, West Viriginia on July 7. A new Bon Jovi album is set for released in 2013, Jon said last year. Meanwhile, he is also booked for his first public solo gig, with side group the Kings of Suburbia, in Florida on July 26.
