Tom Cruise turned 50 on Tuesday, July 3, days after his wife Katie Holmes filed for divorce after more than five years of marriage, and took the opportunity to promote his new movie, "Jack Reacher."
The filing, made on June 28, had reportedly come as a "complete surprise" to the actor, who was in Iceland shooting a different film - the sci-fi flick "Oblivion." Cruise attorney said the actor is concentrating on his children. Cruise and Holmes share a 6-year-old daughter, Suri, and the actress is seeking full custody of the child.
Cruise has not commented about the divorce in person or through social media. On Tuesday, his Twitter page was filled with ReTweeted birthday messages from fans as well as a link to a trailer for "Jack Reacher."
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BOSS!!! Today is Tom's 50th BDay! U guys ROCK! We'll be over-nighting all of your Bday wishes to him!" read a message posted by a rep for Cruise on his Twitter page. "On the occasion of Tom's birthday 2Day, we're very happy 2share the NEW 'Jack Reacher' #movie #trailer with U!"
Cruise had planned to celebrate his 50th birthday in Iceland with Holmes, 33, but left the country early on Tuesday and flew to California, according to People magazine. The pair has several homes, including a mansion in Beverly Hills.
The outlet said his wife and Suri had recently moved out of the couple's apartment in New York, where she had filed for divorce and where such filings are sealed.
Cruise and Holmes were married in a Scientology ceremony in 2006 in Italy. This was her first marriage and Cruise's third - he was previously married to actress Mimi Rogers between 1987 and 1990 and to actress Nicole Kidman. The two wed in December of that year and divorced in 2001. They have two adopted children - Isabella, 19, and his son Connor, 17.
In "Jack Reacher," Cruise portrays the title character, a rogue investigator who probes a case involving a psychopathic trained military sniper who shot dead five people in a massacre at a public plaza. The shooter claims he's innocent and had actually asked for Reacher to come. The movie is based on a 2005 book by Lee Child and also stars Robert Duvall, Joseph Sikora and British actress Rosamund Pike. The trailer features several action scenes.
"You think I'm a hero?" Cruise's character asks. "I am not a hero. And if you're smart, that scares you. Because I have nothing to lose."
"Remember - you wanted this," he says, before he beats up a group of men on a street.
"Jack Reacher" hits theaters on December 21.
