Katie Holmes reportedly reached out to Nicole Kidman before filing for a divorce from the actress' ex-husband Tom Cruise.
Kidman went through a brutal divorce with the actor, who won custody of their two adopted children - Isabella, 19, and his son Connor, 17. Many reports have insinuated that the Church of Scientology turned Isabella and Connor against their mother during the divorce proceedings.
A source told Us Weekly magazine that Holmes reached out to Kidman, who divorced Cruise in 2001, seeking advice. The Los Angeles Times reported that Holmes has been taking measures to ensure her divorce is not as messy, including using disposable phones.
"They've spoken over the last few weeks," a source told Us Weekly magazine. "Nicole has been supportive, saying she's been through it too and to hang in there."
A source told the weekly that Holmes and Kidman, 45, have been in contact since the "Dawson's Creek" actress married Cruise in 2006, as Kidman maintains contact with Isabella and Connor. Kidman reportedly offered her support and help to Holmes, who has been a "private friend."
Holmes filed the papers on June 28, seeking sole custody of the child. The filing had reportedly come as a "complete surprise" to Cruise, 50, who was in Iceland shooting the sci-fi flick "Oblivion."
The separation of the couple, one of Hollywood's most famous, has ignited a media storm and speculation that Holmes, 33, aims to keep their daughter, her only child, from being raised in the Church of Scientology - Cruise's religion.
The pair issued a joint statement on Monday which said that they are "committed to working together as parents to accomplishing" what is in their 6-year-old daughter Suri's "best interests." No details about custody arrangements, child support or other financial matters were disclosed, but it is believed that Suri will live primarily with Holmes.
"The case has been settled and the agreement has been signed," Holmes' attorney said in a statement obtained by OnTheRedCarpet.com on Monday, July 9. "We are thrilled for Katie and her family and are excited to watch as she embarks on the next chapter of her life."
Cruise and Holmes were married in a Scientology ceremony in 2006 in Italy. This was her first marriage and Cruise's third - he was previously married to actress Mimi Rogers between 1987 and 1990 and to actress Nicole Kidman. The two wed in December of that year and divorced in 2001.
Kidman is married to country singer Keith Urban. The couple, who tied the knot in 2006, are also parents to two daughters, 3-year-old Sunday Rose and 17-month-old Faith Margaret.
Kidman, who won an Oscar for portraying Virginia Woolf in the 2003 film "The Hours", was also nominated for a 2011 Oscar for her role in "Rabbit Hole." The actress will next star opposite Dermot Mulroney in "Stoker," which is slated for release later in the year.
