OTRC: Sam Claflin to portray Finnick in 'Hunger Games: Catching Fire,' report says

Sam Claflin talks to OnTheRedCarpet.com at a press junket for 'Snow White and the Huntsman' outside of Arundel Castle in West Sussex in the United Kingdom in May 2012.

"Snow White and the Huntsman" actor Sam Claflin is reportedly in talks to portray Finnick Odair in "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire."

A source told Variety magazine that the 26-year-old British actor has scored the coveted role. Though Lionsgate and Claflin's rep had no immediate response to the reports. Warning: Book spoilers ahead!

Claflin is known for portraying William, a Prince Charming-type character opposite Kristen Stewart in "Snow White and the Huntsman." He also appeared in "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" and in the TV mini-series, "The Pillars of the Earth."

In "Catching Fire," The Hunger Games arena is prepared for the Quarter Quell, a special event in Panem which commemorates The Hunger Games every 25 years. For the 75th Hunger Games and the third Quarter Quell, two former winning tributes (victors) from each district from previous Hunger Games must return to the arena and battle to the death again? including Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson).

Finnick Odair was the victor of the 65th Hunger Games when he was 14-years-old. He was unprecedentedly popular among the Capital thanks to his physical skills and extraordinary beauty. During his first round in the Hunger Games arena, he was given many gifts by suitors from the Capital, which helped in his survival.

Odair also appears in the third book, "Mockingjay." It was recently revealed that the final book would be split into two separate films.

The District 4 tribute role was the most highly-anticipated casting of the upcoming sequel. Those rumored to be in talks for the role included Garrett Hedlund, Armie Hammer, Taylor Kitsch, Hunter Parrish and Alex Pettyfer. "Twilight" star Robert Pattinson and "90210" star Trevor Donovan both denied rumors of their casting in the role.

It was officially confirmed on the Hunger Games official Facebook page on July 17 that Amanda Plummer had been cast as Wiress in the film. The character, who earns the nickname "Nuts" in the book, for her unconventional communication style.

Variety also reports that Oscar-winner Melissa Leo and three-time Emmy winner Tony Shalhoub are the frontrunners to portray Mags and Beetee in the film.

It was announced earlier in the month that Oscar-winner Phillip Seymour Hoffman would portray Head Gamemaker Plutarch Heavensbee in "Catching Fire."

It was also announced that "Donnie Darko" actress Jena Malone is in talks to portray Johanna Mason, a tribute that Katniss and Peeta must face off against when they return to The Hunger Games arena for the Quarter Quell.

It was recently confirmed that Francis Lawrence would take over directing duties for "Catching Fire" after "The Hunger Games" director Gary Ross dropped out due to time constraints.

Lawrence, who was born in Austria and was raised in California, previously helmed the 2011 romantic drama "Water For Elephants," "I Am Legend" and the 2005 movie "Constantine."

"Catching Fire," based on the second book in Suzanne Collins' hugely popular "Hunger Games" trilogy, is set for release on Nov. 22, 2013.
