Downey toddler shooting: 1 suspect in custody, 3 more sought

DOWNEY, Calif.

The gunfire erupted on Telegraph Road at about 4:30 p.m. Friday in front of the victims' apartment complex. Downey police say the 20-year-old father was shot four to five times, and his daughter was shot once.

According to police, the father got into some sort of altercation earlier in the day. He then walked home but was called back out onto the street, where the shooting took place. His daughter was home inside the apartment but decided to walk outside when the gunfire erupted, and that's when she was shot.

Police believe the whole incident was gang related, but the victims' family members say it wasn't. Area residents say such violence is not typical for the neighborhood.

Both the father and daughter underwent surgery and are in recovery as of Saturday morning.

Police are still searching for three others suspected of being involved in the shooting. If you have any information that can help investigators, you're urged to contact Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS (8477).
