Bellflower man, 85, saved from burning home by neighbor, firefighters

BELLFLOWER, Calif.

When deputies arrived Saturday afternoon, they heard the man calling for help but metal security bars on windows and doors were blocking access.

One deputy managed to pull off one of the security bars and broke a window. Only a 59-year-old neighbor was small enough to squeeze in and opened the kitchen door. Deputies then ran in and pulled the man to safety.

The victim, 85, was treated at a hospital and released. Two deputies were hospitalized and reported in stable condition.

Damage to the house and its contents was estimated at $30,000.
