OTRC: John Lithgow talks 'The Campaign,' loving America (Video)

John Lithgow talks to OnTheRedCarpet.com at the Los Angeles premiere of the Will Ferrell-Zach Galifianakis comedy movie 'The Campaign' on Aug. 2, 2012.

John Lithgow told OnTheRedCarpet.com his latest film, the comedy "The Campaign," makes him proud to be an American.

"Politics has gotten so ugly it's been turning everybody's stomach," Lithgow said at the Los Angeles premiere. "This just...you gotta love America. The fact that this country can generate a movie like this, in the middle of the political season, I think it makes me feel more American than anything."

The veteran actor, known for iconic films such as "Terms of Endearment" and "Footloose,"appears in the film with Zach Galifianakis and Will Ferrel.

He plays a corrupt businessman who, along with his brother, tries to seize an opportunity to oust long-term congressman Cam Brady (Ferrell) by putting up an opposing candidate. Their man: naive Marty Huggins, played by Galifianakis, who is the director of the local Tourism Center.

Lithgow, 66, explained how while the film is largely a comedy, there are some serious and very real truths throughout.

"Danny and I are basically the heavy's in this movie, and heavy's gotta be heavy, even in a comedy," Lithgow said. "It's gotta be hilariously funny, but there's gotta be a couple of chilling moments - and there is."

"I speak one line in the movie where I say, 'In American politics, if you've got enough money, nothing is predictable.' And to me that is quite a terrifying line," he added. "It resonates with the truth. Well, you know at this heart of this wacky, wacky comedy, there are a lot of truths. And I think it's doing a service, making us laugh at it."

Lithgow is known for his vast acting career with films such as "Cliffhanger," "Shrek," "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" and the hit 90s show "3rd Rock from the Sun."

"The Campaign" hit theaters on August 10. Watch a trailer for "The Campaign" below.
