OTRC: Jennifer Garner talks motherhood and 'The Odd Life of Timothy Green'

Jennifer Garner talks to OnTheRedCarpet.com about 'The Odd Life of Timothy Green' on August 10, 2012.

Jennifer Garner said that her experience with her own children helped her with her role in "The Odd Life of Timothy Green."

"I don't have problems with fertility, clearly, but I can really imagine what it's like for my friends who are going through it and just try to respectfully play what they've gone through," Garner told OnTheRedCarpet.com during an August 10 interview. "That being said, it was helpful to have been a mom a couple of times over when I made this movie."

In the film Garner plays Cindy Green, who, along with her husband Jim Green (played by Australian actor Joel Edgerton), finds out that they are unable to conceive a child. To try to overcome their grief, the couple makes wishes for their ideal child and puts them in a box which they burry in their back yard.

The next day the couple wakes up to find a ten-year-old child (played by Cameron "CJ" Adams) named Timothy who claims to be their son. They soon realize the child is very unique.

The 40-year-old actress said that the film was unique in that it was relatable to both young and old, which she realized when she took her "mom friends" to the film.

"When we came out of the theatre, my mom friends had been crying the whole time, had gone through a whole package of Kleenex and they said it was because they recognized themselves so much in the movie, not because it was so sad but just because they saw themselves on screen," Garner said. "And their 10 year old said, 'why you crying? That was a kids' movie. That was for me.' So, what more can you ask if you're taking the kids to the movie and everyone wins?"

The movie is based on a story by Ahmed Zappa, who has worked with Walt Disney, the film's studio, for years.

"Peter Hedges does an amazing job - he wrote it and directed it - of juxtaposing this very real story of this family and all the cragginess and messiness that happens in a family and parenting and relationships and all of this stuff against something magical that happens that can't be explained," Garner said of the film's director."That kind of lifts you out of what's normal and yourself and helps you fall into the story."

Garner and her husband, Ben Affleck, welcomed a son, Samuel, on February 27. She and Affleck are also parents to daughters Violet, 6, and Seraphina, 3.

The actress rose to fame playing a secret agent in the spy series "Alias" and has also appeared in movies such as "Dude, Where's My Car?" with Ashton Kutcher and "13 Going on 30" with "Avengers" star Mark Ruffalo.
