Bobby Brown is in rehab, his lawyer says, months following a DUI arrest and after battling substance abuse for years.
The 43-year-old singer, known for his turbulent marriage to the late Whitney Houston, admitted himself into a confidential rehabilitation center last week.
In March 2012, Brown was arrested for using his cell phone on a public way without a headset and the suspicion of driving under the influence. He checked in as a part of an agreement he had with the State of California following his arrest.
"Mr. Brown takes his agreement very seriously and admitted himself three weeks after concluding his honeymoon in Mexico during a break from the New Edition tour," his attorney Christopher Brown told OnTheRedcarpet.com in a statement on Thursday, August 16. "Bobby is doing well and receiving services that comply with his agreement with the State of California."
"Bobby's children and loved ones are very proud of him," his wife Alicia Etheredge said. "We appreciate his fans prayers and well wishes. Bobby is mentally in a good place."
The singer, who is currently on tour with his popular R&B group New Edition, married his fiance Etheredge in Hawaii on June 18. After dating for three years, Brown popped the question in May 2010 while at a concert in Jacksonville, Florida. The pair share 3-year-old son Cassius.
In April, Brown pleaded no contest to driving under the influence of alcohol following his DUI arrest in March, and was sentenced to 36 months of probation.
The singer, who told Matt Lauer in an April interview that he is "very much clean and sober from narcotics," has battled substance abuse for years and has a prior DUI conviction from 1996. He pleaded guilty to the charge six years later and was sentenced to eight days in jail.
In 2004, he was sentenced to 60 days behind bars for violating his probation, months after he was arrested and charged with battery following a domestic dispute with Houston. In 2008, he was sentenced to a year of community service after police found him in an SUV in possession of a small amount of cocaine.
