Gossip blogger Perez Hilton is rehearsing to make his off-Broadway debut in "NEWSical the Musical" on September 8.
Hilton will appear in the musical revue, which sets news and pop culture headlines to song, for four weeks. The musical's composer/lyricist Rick Crom will personalize new songs for the blogger, with numbers about himself as well as about Chick-fil-A. The fast food chain has come under fire in recent weeks after its president expressed opposition to same-sex marriage in an interview with a religious newspaper.
The 34-year-old blogger and TV personality, who is openly gay himself and has criticized Chick-fil-A on his blog, will make his debut in a preview performance in "NEWSical the Musical" on September 8, before the opening night press performance on September 17.
"Dreams do come true, if you believe. And I BELIEVE, big time!" Perez Hilton said in a press release. "I am beyond thrilled, nervous and zen about making my New York theater debut. It's gonna be a wild ride in a show that guarantees to put smiles on people's faces. It will be no holds barred! Pure unadulterated fun! I expect to have the time of my life and look forward to hugging happy theatergoers after each show!"
Perez Hilton, whose real name is Mario Armando Lavandeira Jr., launched his blog PerezHilton.com in 2000. The controversial celebrity reporter is known for attempting to "out" celebrities he believes are gay and also for being unapologetic about his desire to become part of celebrity culture. Hilton has more than 5.4 million followers on Twitter.
"What do you do when your show needs to sell tickets? You bring in a celebrity," producer Tom D'Angora said of his decision. "Perez Hilton was the perfect choice because our show is basically the musical version of his highlarious website. If you are a daily reader of Perez like I've been since 2007, you know how funny and charismatic he is. We couldn't be more excited to welcome him as the newest member of our talented cast."
