High surf, strong currents keep many beachgoers dry over Labor Day weekend

VENICE BEACH

Lifeguards say that over the holiday weekend, from Marina del Rey to Topanga, they've had more than 1 million visitors. County lifeguards performed 217 rescues.

The search for a missing swimmer last seen Sunday off the coast of Dana Point was canceled Monday afternoon. He was identified as Frank Daniel Austin, 34. He's now presumed dead.

Waves at Venice Beach had many people choosing to stay out of the water Monday.

All those people out of the water is great for beach businesses, also benefiting from nearly perfect weather.

A high surf advisory was in effect all day Monday. The largest surf in the L.A. area to the north was from Point Mugu to Point Dume, and to the south was from Long Beach to Seal Beach.
