Philip Dhanens, 18, had reportedly been drinking heavily Friday night at the Theta Chi fraternity house off-campus.
Police say someone put him in the so-called "sober-up" room. When they checked on him later, Dhanens was unconscious. After two days in the hospital, he was taken off life support on Sunday.
"This is his first semester basically, so this is like wow. He didn't even have a chance to get that full college experience," said Charles Jones, a senior at the school. "As far as Fresno State, it's just bad that they have to be associated with that."
Dhanen's mother says her son suffered brain damage. Police are now investigating the incident and are trying to determine if hazing may have been involved.
