Heidi Klum has spoken out about her estranged husband Seal after the singer made sarcastic comments about her to a member of the paparazzi when asked about her rumored new boyfriend.
"I cherish all of the great memories Seal and I created together over the years," Klum said in a statement, posted by People magazine on Monday. "Our separation was based on issues between the two of us," she continues. "Seal has moved on and so have I. My priority has and continues to be protecting and providing for our children."
The 39-year-old "Project Runway" host and supermodel and Seal, 49, announced their split in January and she filed for divorce a month later. They share four children - Leni, Klum's 8-year-old daughter from a previous relationship, sons Henry and Johan, who are 6 and 5, and daughter Lou, 2. Seal filed his own divorce papers on April 10 seeking joint physical custody of all the kids.
Recent celebrity photographs posted by outlets such as the UK's Daily Mail show Klum appearing cozy with her longtime bodyguard, Martin Kristen. The two have not confirmed a relationship.
Last week, as he was leaving Los Angeles' main airport, Seal was asked about the matter by a celebrity cameraman. The singer, who has for years mostly avoided and even insulted the paparazzi, answered candidly. A video of their exchange was posted by TMZ.
"Look boys, that's what happens when two people separate, they move on and that generally means [they have] other people in their lives," Seal said. "I certainly don't expect Heidi to all of a sudden become a nun but as always, my main priority is the emotional well-being of our children and to be quite honest, if there is going to be somebody else in their lives, I'd much rather it was a familiar face."
"I guess the only thing I would have preferred is that, whilst I didn't expect any better from him, I would have thought Heidi would have showed a little bit more class and at least waited until we separated first before deciding to fornicate with the help, as it were," Seal added. "But I guess you all have the answer now - that you've been looking for the past seven months."
His rep later clarified in a statement to Us Weekly that the singer "was not implying his wife was cheating while they were together, but he was merely pointing out that their separation and divorce were not final and they are still legally married."
"These guys bombarded him and were in his face. He was exhausted, which is why he wants to clarify what he said," the spokesperson added. "He doesn't like now being made into the bad guy here - he always loved and cared for Heidi."
Seal and Klum have long been paparazzi favorites. Celebrity photographers and cameramen have followed them around Los Angeles for years and Seal has often voiced his frustration about it.
In one 2008 incident, which was videotaped, several paparazzi swarmed the couple during a night on the town. Seal lashed out at them, saying: "Why would I shake your hand? Why would I shake hands with scum? You're scum. You ruin people's lives. You think I'm going to be nice to you because you're filming me? I'm ready for any of you. Bring it."
