Nina Dobrev recalls how she initially fought her romantic feelings for her "Vampire Diaries" co-star Ian Somerhalder, who is now her boyfriend.
The 23-year-old actress made her comments to Seventeen magazine, which features her on the cover of its October 2012 issue. She made her debut as its cover girl in its April 2010 issue, which was released a year after "The Vampire Diaries" premiered on the CW network.
"The first time I was on the cover of Seventeen, the cover line said 'Nina: Why she wouldn't date any of her co-stars,'" Dobrev told the magazine in her recent interview.
"And then cut to two years later ... it's funny that I said that, but you know what? It was honestly what I believed at the time. I didn't want to be dating one of my co-stars - my goal on the show was to be professional. But sometimes you can't help who you have a connection with, and you can only fight it for so long - which I did for a really, really long time."
Somerhalder, 33, plays the vampire Damon, a love interest of Dobrev's character, Elena. The two have shared some pretty sizzling scenes on the show since its 2009 debut and have long spurred romance rumors. The two actors were finallly photographed kissing at the Coachella Valley Music Festival in California in April.
Dobrev told Seventeen in an interview published in its April 2010 issue that she thinks it "could definitely get sticky if you dated your co-star."
"To be completely honest, dating an actor is very complicated," she said. "There's a lot of vanity involved. And they're in their head and they're kind of crazy. And you're always surrounded by beautiful people. I would prefer not to date an actor."
The actress also said at the time that Somerhalder is "the prankster" on the set of "The Vampire Diaries," adding: "He makes light of every moment and he's very exciting and cool. He has the best stories, because he has just experienced so much and he's been on so many cool sets and movies."
When asked what kind of guys she is attracted to, she said she likes those who are "a little mysterious."
"There has to be a little bit of that cat-and-mouse situation to make it worthwhile, but if it becomes too much work, then it's not fun" she told Seventeen. "And once it's not fun anymore, it's not worth it."
"I like to be taken care of," she added in her 2010 interview. "But I don't need a boyfriend to be happy. If I meet someone and I want to be with him, then I will be. I'm very confident in being single until I find someone who I'm extremely crazy about and who I want to devote my time and love to."
"The Vampire Diaries" also stars Paul Wesley as Elena's other love interest, the vampire Stefan. The series returns for a fourth season on October 11. The actor, Somerhalder and Dobrev caught up with OTRC.com at San Diego Comic-Con in July to talk about the upcoming season (spoiler alert!).
The CW released on Tuesday a sneak peek video of season 4 of "The Vampire Diaries." You can check it out below.
