OTRC: Patti LaBelle settles lawsuit after throwing water at mom and child

Patti LaBelle has settled a lawsuit over a 2011 incident, where she threw water and swore at a woman and her toddler in an apartment lobby.

According to the Associated Press, the Grammy-winning R&B singer agreed to pay $100,000 to former Manhattan kindergarten teacher Roseanna Monk, who said that LaBelle scolded her for allowing her daughter Genevieve to walk several steps away from her as she focused on carrying luggage and a car seat inside the building's lobby.

Monk and her husband Kevin filed the lawsuit against LaBelle in August 2011. The incident in question is said to have occurred in November 2010. LaBelle had lived in the apartment complex while appearing in the Broadway musical "Fela!," the woman's lawyer told the news wire.

Monk told the New York Post, which printed a photo of her and her child, that LaBelle "said in an aggressive tone, 'You shouldn't have left your daughter by the door."

"I told her, 'I have no interest in what you say or think,'" Monk said. "She became enraged and started using profanities ... She had a bottle of water and started flicking water from the bottle on me."

The newspaper quoted her as saying that LaBelle then "lunged" at her while she was holding her child, and "had to be restrained by her entourage and be pulled out to a waiting car." At that point, Monk said, Genevieve was crying and also vomited.

Monk filed a police complaint over the matter, according to the Associated Press. No arrests or charges were made.

LaBelle has not commented on the matter. The Monk's lawyer, Sam Davis, told the New York Post that the case was settled before being deposed and that the couple plans to donate all of the money to the Hope & Heroes children's cancer charity.

The lawsuit was filed a few months after a West Point cadet sued LaBelle, accusing her of ordering her bodyguards to beat him up. The singer filed a counter suit, saying he was the one who attacked the men first after hurling racial insults at her.
