Kellie Pickler shaved her head for a good cause.
The 26-year-old singer and former "American Idol" contestant shaved off her hair completely on Tuesday, September 4, in solidarity with her best friend Summer Miller who was diagnosed with breast cancer and was about to undergo chemotherapy treatments.
Pickler was seen in a video featured on "Good Morning America" getting her head shaved with Miller, whose chemotherapy treatments begin on September 6. Miller was diagnosed in June with breast cancer at age 36 and Pickler calls Miller her "sister" in a statement about the video.
The two buzzed off their hair to bring attention to the importance of early detection.
"Cancer does not discriminate," Pickler said in a statement featured on her official Facebook page.
Miller added, "If this compels even one person to change their mentality toward waiting until the age of 40 for their mammogram, then it will be worth it."
Miller had a family history of breast cancer and after a mammogram, a tumor was detected in its early stages. Miller subsequently underwent a double mastectomy.
After getting her hair buzzed in Nashville with Miller, Pickler Tweeted, "It's been a great life-changing day."
Pickler came in sixth place on "American Idol" during the FOX singing contest show's fifth season in 2006. She has since released three albums and several hit singles, such as "Best Days of Your Life" in 2008.
In January 2011 she eloped with fiance and songwriter Kyle Jacobs in a Antigua.
