Pursuit of reckless Mercedes driver ends in Downey

DOWNEY, Calif.

Authorities say the pursuit began just before 10:30 a.m. when officers tried to pull the motorist over for reckless driving near the Sherman Oaks area. The driver failed to yield and drove at high speeds on the southbound 101 Freeway.

The chase then went to the southbound 5 Freeway, where the driver exited on Lakewood Boulevard. After driving recklessly on local streets, including driving over a median and doing "donuts," he stopped on Garnish Drive near Appleby Street in Downey just before 11 a.m.

As he got out of the car, a woman ran out from a nearby home. The woman was identified as his mother. Both followed police instruction to get on the ground.

The woman is not expected to face charges. Her son, whose name has not been released, could face felony evading and reckless driving charges. He is in police custody.
