The city's health board passed the big soda ban on Thursday.
The regulation limits the size of non-diet soda, sweetened teas and other calorie-laden beverages to 16 ounces.
The ban applies to fast-food restaurants, movie and Broadway theaters, workplace cafeterias and most other places selling prepared food. The rule does not cover beverages sold in supermarkets or most convenience stores. Enforcement would be conducted by city restaurant inspectors. A violation would lead to a $200 fine.
Officials say the ban is necessary to fight a deadly obesity epidemic. The restaurant and beverage industries say the ban is misguided. Some New Yorkers have also ridiculed the rule as a gross government intrusion and tens of thousands signed a petition, circulated by the industry, voicing their opposition.
The regulation was proposed in the spring by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who sees it as a pioneering step for public health.
Some doctors and nutrition experts say the rule starts a conversation that could change attitudes toward overeating.
