"Homeland" has won the 2012 Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series for the first time, ending a four-year winning streak for "Mad Men."
"Homeland" is a Showtime series starring Claire Danes as bipolar CIA agent Carrie Mathison and Damian Lewis as rescued U.S. Iraq War veteran and suspected terrorist Nicholas Brody. The show also beat "Boardwalk Empire," "Breaking Bad," "Downton Abbey" and "Game of Thrones" at Sunday's Primetime Emmys ceremony in Los Angeles.
"Homeland" debuted in 2011. Earlier this year, won the Golden Globe for Best Television Series - Drama.
In "Homeland," Mathison suspects Brody, who was brainwashed by an Islamic terrorist leader in Iraq, is plotting an attack in the United States. The two also become involved, even though he is married with children.
The show earned nine Emmy nominations this year and won six awards. Lewis won Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series for his role, marking his first win, while Danes won Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series. The series also won Outstanding Writing For A Drama Series, Outstanding Casting For A Drama Series and Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing For A Drama Series.
Earlier this year, the show won the Golden Globe for Best Television Series - Drama. The second season of "Homeland" is set to premiere on September 30.
Mandy Patinkin, who plays Mathinson's mentor at the CIA, was not nominated but Danes paid tribute to him in her previous acceptance speech.
Mandy Patinkin - holla," she said. "Mandy is one of the most beautful, generous, loving imaginative actors I've ever come across."
Danes also thanked her husband Hugh Dancy. She is currently pregnant with their first child.
"My husband, my love, my life, my baby daddy," she said. "This just doesn't mean anything without you. Anyway, I love you so very, very much. I'm so grateful. Thank you."
Danes earned her first Emmy nomination in 1995, given for her lead role in the short-lived series "My So-Called Life," which launched the actress' career. She won her first Emmy in 2010, for the television film "Temple Grandin."
The 2012 Emmy Awards ceremony was held at L.A. Live's Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 23 and aired on ABC. The event was hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, who also hosts the network's hit late-night talk show "Jimmy Kimmel Live!."
