Justin Bieber's mother, Pattie Malette, details her difficult upbringing and teen years in her memoir "Nowhere but Up: The story of Justin Bieber's Mom."
Malette reveals that she went through years of sex abuse, drug abuse and that she attempted suicide six months before becoming pregnant with Bieber at age 18. Previously, Malette has only spoken a little about her troubled past.
The 37-year-old mom to the singing superstar co-wrote the memoir, which was released on September 18, in collaboration with A.J. Gregory. A portion of the proceeds from the book have been promised to shelters which help pregnant teen moms, much like the one in Canada that Mallette was housed in after her mother kicked her out of the family home after getting pregnant.
Mallette writes that she was just 2 years old when her alcoholic father abandoned the family and was around 3 years old when she was first abused sexually by someone she knew. She does not identify the several people who have molested her in the past by name, but in the book's acknowledgement section she writes, "To my abusers: I forgive you."
"I was sexually violated so many times that as the years went by it began to feel normal," Mallette writes. "It's a strange marriage - knowing something is wrong yet at the same time finding it familiar and commonplace."
Mallette says she began drinking and using drugs, like marijuana and LSD, when she was 14. She left home just two years later and got into pot dealing and petty crime to support herself. It was around that time she met Jeremy Bieber and the two began what would become a four-year on-again-off-again relationship.
Bieber's mother also talks about the time she attempted suicide at 17 by throwing herself in front of a truck. She later landed in a mental ward. Mallette recovered and found religion, but her renewed faith soon faltered and she found herself falling back into her old routines.
She later discovered she was pregnant with Jeremy Bieber's child and Mallette said she resisted pressure from people around her to get an abortion.
"I knew that I had to do what it took," Mallette writes. "I just couldn't abort him."
She was just 18 when she gave birth to Justin Bieber, who she had originally planned to name Jesse.
Early on Bieber displayed his musical talent and at 6 years old, the young singer began playing a guitar and a djembe drum for extra cash on the streets. Mallette said she never forced Bieber to do it but he ended up earning the family thousands of dollars after the first time.
Her son's success would continue after she uploaded videos of a then 12-year-old Justin Bieber on YouTube singing popular songs. Bieber's performances went viral and by 13, he was signed with manager Scooter Braun.
Justin Bieber, who is now 18, recently bought a house for himself in Calabasas, California and is dating singer and actress Selena Gomez.
"She's just a sweetheart. She's kind and generous and loving," Mallette said of Gomez to The Associated Press in a recent interview.
Mallette also said at 21 she chose to abstain from sex outside of marriage and promised her son when they first moved to the United States to start his career that she would not date until he was 18.
"It's time to start dating," she told the wire service.
