OTRC: 'Hotel Transylvania' tops weekend box office with $43 million

"Hotel Transylvania" was a hit with audiences over the weekend and beat out the sci-fi film "Looper" with Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

The family friendly animated tale features the voices of Adam Sandler and Selena Gomez. The film earned an estimated $43 million in its opening weekend, according to The Associated Press. The movie set a record for a September film debut, beating the previous record holder, the 2002 film "Sweet Home Alabama," which opened with $35.7 million.

"Hotel Transylvania" is about Dracula's (Sandler) "five-stake" holiday resort for monsters, which he built to shield his daughter Mavis (Gomez) from humans. But when a fearless human (Samberg) arrives at the resort, Mavis falls for him.

The runner up at the box office was the sci-fi / time-travel thriller "Looper." The movie debuted in the second spot at the box office with an estimated $21.2 million.

The movie is set in 2042. Gordon-Levitt's character, Joseph Simmons, is a Kansas City mafia member and an assassin known as a Looper, who is paid to kill agents sent back in time by their employers. He is shocked to discover that his newest target is his older self.

The previous No. 1 film, "End of Watch," fell to third place, earning an estimated $8 million. Its domestic total now stands at $26.2 million for its two weeks in theaters.

The Clint Eastwood baseball film "Trouble with the Curve" came in fourth place for the weekend. The film, which also stars Amy Adams and Justin Timberlake, earned an estimated $7.5 million. "Trouble with the Curve" has earned $23.7 million at the box office for its two weeks in theaters, according to Boxofficemojo.com.

Rounding out the top five films is the Jennifer Lawrence thriller "House at the End of the Street," with $7.2 million. The film has earned 22.2 million for its two weekends in theaters.
