Judge orders Adelanto board to approve charter campus reform

ADELANTO, Calif.

A judge ordered Adelanto Elementary School District board members to approve a "parent-trigger" petition filed by Desert Trail parents to open a charter campus at their failing elementary school.

Board members had previously rejected the petition twice earlier this year because they doubted its validity. They had concluded that there was insufficient time to change the school into a charter campus by the new school year.

In a news conference held in Downtown Los Angeles Monday, the Desert Trail Parents Union announced they are immediately planning to begin the process of selecting between different non-profit charter operators to take over the campus in the 2012-2013 school year.

The ruling paves the way for Desert Trails to become the first school in the state to take advantage of 2010's "parent-trigger" law which allows parents to force reforms at failing schools.
