OTRC: Matthew Fox - 5 facts about 'Alex Cross,' 35-pound weight loss

Matthew Fox appears talking to OTRC.com at the Oct. 15, 2012 premiere of his action thriller 'Alex Cross.' (OTRC)

Matthew Fox, known best for playing a family patriarch on "Party of Five" and a hero on ABC's "LOST," switches gears to play a serial killer in the new action film "Alex Cross" - and the transformation was not just psychological.

The movie was released on Friday, October 19, and stars Tyler Perry as the main character.

Check out 5 facts about Matthew Fox and "Alex Cross."

1. Matthew, you look different ...

"I lost 35 pounds," Fox, 46, told OTRC.com at the movie's premiere. "And it was really hard ... I was never sure I could do something like that. I proved that I could. I had a lot of help. I had somebody to help structure a nutritional plan and a workout plan ... I was really dedicated to it and committed to it and I didn't cheat."

2. The actor has a "morbid" fascination with serial killers.

In the film, which hit theaters on Friday, Tyler Perry plays Alex Cross, a homicide detective who hunts down Fox's character, named Picasso. Perry told OTRC.com that Fox's performance was "brilliantly creepy.".

"My whole life I've been sort of fascinated with these kind of guys," Fox told OTRC.com. "Anytime I'd see a documentary or an interview with like, a Ted Bundy or a Jeffrey Dahmer ... I've always been sort of morbidly fascinated by what makes those guys tick and how they rationalize that kind of just incredible behavior, that kind of compulsions and the sort of addictions and the socially deviant behavior."

"It's so sort of outside of what people n our society understand or accept and so I looked at the script and I was like, 'This is an opportunity to really dig in there and try to figure that out for this particular guy,' he added. "He was a pretty special character on the page - he was both sinister and psychopathic but at the same time, extremely intelligent and almost magnetic. So it was this really interesting stuff that started to happen in my mind about maybe I could do with it."

3. Tyler Perry hit him accidentally - but he's used to fighting mishaps.

In addition to his weight loss, Fox also put on some serious for his role. Such measures were necessary, as the film features physical violence, including a confrontation between Picasso and Perry's character.

"We had a couple of accidents while we were doing the fight sequence," Fox said. "He caught me with an elbow one time.

"But that happens in every single fight sequence I've ever done and I've been on the other side of that, when I was doing 'Speed Racer,' I accidentally hit somebody and I felt horrible." Tyler felt horrible - he called me for like two days afterwards, like 'I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry.' I said, 'Look, man, this kind of thing happens when it's 2 o'clock in the morning and you'd been working on a fight sequence for two days and you're exhausted,'" Fox added.

The actor had a minor role in the 2008 film "Speed Racer," which was directed by "The Matrix" duo Andy Wachowski and Lana Wachowski.

4. But Matthew Fox actually likes to get physical.

"I have a little background in that kind of fighting stuff," Fox added. "I studied Tae Kwon Do for a few years and did some tournament fighting. I like to be physical, so that part of it sort of connects me to the character in a way that feels visceral and real."

Fox made headlines earlier this year when he was arrested during a physical confrontation on a bus in Cleveland, where he was filming "Alex Cross." During an interview on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" that aired earlier this week, the actor denied a woman's claim that he allegedly hit her. The incident spurred a lawsuit, which was dismissed.

5. He's leaving Jack from "LOST" behind.

Fox played Charlie Salinger, the eldest brother among five orphan siblings, in the family drama series "Party of Five" between 1994 and 2000. He later played Jack Shephard, a doctor and leader of plane crash survivors, on the ABC mystery series "LOST," which aired between 2004 and 2010. He has also appeared in movies such as "Smokin' Aces" and "We Are Marshall" and also recently filmed "World War Z" with Brad Pitt.

"I don't want to do the same thing over and over again," Fox told OTRC.com. "I think I would get tired of that. I'm always going to be looking to do new things."
