The official teaser trailer for "Iron Man 3," which sees Robert Downey Jr. reprising his role as the title superhero and alter ego and billionaire Tony Stark, has been released.
In the new sequel to the hit Marvel film franchise, Stark battles a new enemy - the Mandarin, played by Sir Ben Kingsley, and, as seen in the clip, viewers will also get to see the Marvel comic book character Iron Patriot, whose identity remains unknown. Additional newcomers include British actors Guy Pearce, who portrays the geneticist Aldrich Killian, and Rebecca Hall, who stars as fellow scientist Maya Hansen.
"Marvel's 'Iron Man 3' pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds," distributor Walt Disney Pictures said in a statement. "When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy's hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle."
"With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him," the statement added. "As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?"
Gwyneth Paltrow reprises her role as Stark's assistant and love interest, Pepper Potts, while Don Cheadle is back as Col. James Rhodes. Jon Favreau, who directed the first two "Iron Man" movies, stars as Happy Hogan.
Cheadle said at Comic Con San Diego in July that "Iron Man 3" is "a little grittier" than the previous two installments, adding: "To me, when you read the script, it kind of feels more like the first one in terms of the level of threat that they're dealing with, that feels like it could be kind of a world war."
"Iron Man 3" hits theaters on May 3, 2013.
