The move came after a surprise inspection prompted by the nationwide meningitis outbreak linked to a different company.
Dr. Madeleine Biondolillo of the state Department of Public Health said inspectors found significant issues with the environment in which drugs were being mixed at the Waltham location of Rhode Island-based Infusion Resource.
The company has agreed to contact its 40 patients and their doctors to have them return any unused medication. Officials say there is no indication any medication the company compounded is unsafe.
There were six new cases of fungal meningitis reported over the weekend, which brings the total number of cases linked to the tainted steroids outbreak to 338. Three of them were reported in Florida, two in Ohio and one in Indiana. Twenty five people have died.
