George Clooney may have another famous branch on his family tree.
The 51-year-old actor is already known to be the nephew of singer and actress Rosemary Clooney, who died in 2002, but it was also recently discovered by the genealogy website Ancestry.com that he is distantly related to President Abraham Lincoln, according to Reuters.
Clooney is Lincoln's half-first cousin five times removed. The "half" means two of Clooney and Lincoln's ancestors were half-siblings, according to the wire service. Lincoln's mother Nancy Hanks was the half-sister of Clooney's 4th great-grandmother Mary Ann Sparrow. Both men were born in Kentucky.
Clooney is a noted Democrat who held a fundraiser for President Barack Obama in May. The event raised nearly $15 million for President Obama and included guests like Barbra Streisand and her husband James Brolin, Robert Downey Jr., Eddie Murphy, Jack Black, designer Diane Von Furstenberg, Salma Hayek, actor and frequent Oscars host Billy Crystal, Tobey Maguire and Clooney's girlfriend, WWE star Stacy Keibler.
Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, was a Republican who guided the country during the Civil War. He was assassinated in 1865. His life will hit the big screen in a new biopic starring Daniel Day Lewis as the commander-in-chief, Sally Field as First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln and Tommy Lee Jones as Congressional leader Thaddeus Stevens. The film was directed by Steven Spielberg and hits theaters on November 9.
